What
is web hosting and how much does it cost?
A website is made up of files like the ones you have
on your own computer at home. In order to make
your files accessible to other people 24 hours a
day, 7 days a week on the Internet, the files that
make up your website must be placed on a computer
hard drive which is connected to the Internet.
This computer where your website is hosted is called
a "server". Hosting usually costs
around $24.95 per month depending on the size of
your website, what you are using the site for, and
how many visits or "hits" your site gets. |
What
is a "Domain Name"?
www.cimedia.ca is an example of a domain
name. Your domain name will be yourcompany.com,
yourcompany.net, yourcompany.org, or a
variation on yourcompanyname.com (.net, or .org).
Since many domain names are already in use, we may
need to get creative and think of a domain name for
you that will be easy for people to remember and
spell and that is also currently available.
Domain names may be registered for between $9 - and
$50 CDN a year depending on which company or
"registrar" we use to purchase it.
Once you have registered a domain name, it belongs
to you until you decide to stop paying for it.
You may register your domain name and
"park" it - at no additional cost.
"Parking" your domain name is a way to
protect the name you want to use without having to
start paying for hosting until you are ready to
build your site. |
What
is E-commerce? What is a Shopping Cart?
E-commerce is just a word for doing business
on the web, instead of in person, through the mail
or over the phone. A shopping cart is a program that
runs on your web
server. As customers browse your website,
they can click on items they wish to purchase.
The shopping cart program will add the cost of the
items together like a cash register and when the
customer is ready to complete their purchase, they
will be prompted to fill out a form with their
credit card and shipping information. The cart will
calculate shipping and taxes and total their order.
It will also send them an email confirming their

How
much does it cost to build a website?
Websites vary greatly in price depending on
size and complexity. Our rate is $35CDN per hour
and it can run anywhere between $300 and $10,000 to
design a site, with the majority of projects getting
done for less than $3000. Please look
through our portfolio
and if you see a site that is somewhat similar in
size and function to the one you wish to build, we can give you a quick estimate. For a more
in-depth consultation, We recommend to get together
(either in person or over the phone) to talk about
your options. After discussing the details of
your project, we can give you an estimate of what
your site will cost and answer any other questions

How
long will it take to build my website?
This depends on the size of the project. We can
have a small site up and running for you in a week,
a medium size site might take a month and larger
sites will take longer. You can speed up the process
by having all your images and text ready for us.
If you come to us with a realistic deadline and you
have all the materials on hand, we will be glad to
work with you within your time frame. |
Can
I maintain my own website or will you maintain it
for me?
Your website belongs to you and this is your choice.
We have helped our clients learn to make
updates to their own sites while others prefer to
have us make changes for them. We can edit your
site based on my hourly rate of $35 in 15-minute
increments with a minimum charge of $15. |
I
already have a website but I want to improve it, can
you help?
We can help you improve your existing site, teach you
to maintain it yourself or maintain it for you.

I
live in another state, can you still design my
website?
Yes! We are based in Mississauga, Ontario but the
web is borderless. We can create sites for people anywhere
around the world. |

Will
I be able to keep track of how many visits my
website gets?
Yes. Your web server will keep detailed
statistics which tell you how many visits or
"hits" your site gets as well as
information about where those hits are coming from.
Statistics are useful when you are trying to
increase traffic to your site. |
How
do I get listed on the search engines?
During our initial meeting we will discuss key words
and phrases people will use with the search engines
when they are looking for your site or sites like
yours. We will incorporate these key words and
phrases into the text of your website and create
"meta tags" which are invisible to
visitors to your site, but will help the search
engines locate your site. From the very
beginning we will focus on making your site
"search engine friendly". Once your
site is up and running, you will have many options
for promoting your website and I can help your sort
through the choices. |
